Vegan and Vegetarian

  • Nistisima by Georgina Hayden

I just bought my fourth copy of this cookbook, if that isn't a recommendation I don't know what is! It's all vegan recipes from Orthodox Christian fasting traditions- if you're observant you'd spend upwards of 200 days a year eating a vegan diet. The writer isn't vegetarian, and neither am I, but the book is bursting with incredibly simple, outrageously delicious meals that I had never cooked before. Top three dishes so far have been the Serbian caramelised onion baked beans p. 182, the Egyptian herb and taro soup p. 144, and the Cypriot broad bean salad p. 64

  • Ripe Figs by Yasmin Khan

Yasmin Khan traces the line between Europe and the Middle East, gathering recipes and stories from both recent refugees and communities who can trace back their histories hundred of years. I’ve made the Turkish Bride Soup multiple times and it neatly summarises why I love this book. It’s made of simple pantry staples that I’ve eaten a thousand times before (red lentils, spices, yogurt) but tastes somehow like nothing I’ve ever eaten – transformative cooking

  • Drink What You Want by John deBary

This cocktail book has a clever structure – explaining why the classics work, how to tweak them to your taste, and then how to go off script to develop your own creations. Witty and whip-smart, John deBary is a joyful guide to building your bar cart
